CHAPTER SIX

KARA felt as if the floor had caved in under her feet. She clutched the doorknob like a life preserver as emotions washed over her. First came relief; this was a message Jax couldn’t fail to understand. If Anabel had once and for all made up her mind not to marry him, then the reason for this elaborate masquerade was gone, and the whole thing could be over with by midnight.

Of course, reminded a small and relentless voice in the back of her brain, in that case she’d be squarely where she’d started, with a canceled wedding and a groom who was less than thrilled about footing the bills. Relief gave way to annoyance. Everything had been under control until Anabel had poked her nose in once more. What business was it of hers?

Belatedly, Kara listened to herself and started to smile at the absurdity of it all. Just because it used to be her wedding, the woman seems to think she has a right to an opinion!

To tell the truth, though, the fact that Anabel was concerning herself at all left her thoroughly confused. “She told me she didn’t want anything else to do with it,” Kara mused. “So why did she sudddenly decide to dabble in the mess again?”

“It and the mess both refer to the wedding, I assume?” Rhonda asked. “Not that it comes as any real surprise that it’s off.”

Kara wasn’t listening. “Why would she bother?”

Jax hadn’t moved from his relaxed position on the sofa. “I did warn you that Anabel has a tendency to want to control things and people.”

“Oh, you think she’s heard, so that’s why she’s doing this?”

“Heard what?” Rhonda asked.

“Remember the redhead who was at the next table last night?”

Kara frowned. “Not especially.”

“You had other things on your mind,” Jax conceded. “That was one of Anabel’s best friends. Of course she’s heard.”

“Heard what?” Rhonda repeated. Her voice had gotten louder.

“That far from being canceled, the Montgomery wedding is taking place precisely as planned.” Jax shifted the baby’s weight and stood up to flourish a bow in Kara’s direction. “Well, with one small change. The curtain will go up as scheduled, but the part of the bride will be played by Miss Randall’s understudy, Ms. Kara Schuyler.”

Rhonda stared at him, wide-eyed, for a full thirty seconds. Finally, under her breath, she said, “And I actually left my baby with you two lunatics? May heaven forgive me.” She scooped up Dylan’s diaper bag, took the infant from Jax’s arms and without another word let herself out of the duplex.

Silence fell over the living room. Jax sat down on one end of the sofa and Kara sank onto the other.

“You’d think, from her reaction, that there was something really strange about this,” Jax commented.

Kara ignored him. “I wonder what else Anabel’s canceled.”

“Mrs. Gleason for one. I suppose that’s why her message sounded perturbed.”

“Of course that’s why. I’m just surprised everybody else hasn’t called, too. Does that mean Anabel’s only getting started? Or that she only called Rhonda and Mrs.
